the underdogg is the title of dj tre’s debut ep for hyperdub. he had two brilliant tracks featured on our dj rashad tribute compilation next life, but compared to other longterm members of the teklife footwork crew, he hasn’t released much, so we’re very happy to bring him out to play again here. tre has been about since the early days, born and raised on the south side of chicago. encouraged by the late dj rashad and his partner dj spinn, he has been making tracks since 1999, over a decade before footwork’s ascent to global popularity. on this ep his sound, for the most part is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. it features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he’s got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons.

optimo trax presents a 4-track ep from germanys mathias schober, head honcho of berlin’s lossless label. as always we prefer to let our artists do the talking. heres what mathias has to say about this release - the idea behind all tracks on the ep was a simple setup of drums and one synth that would do a main sequence/sound, yet theres a lot of detail in all of them. in a certain way features a 808ish beat with a main sequence coming from a tiny monophon synth called atmegatron - 8bit love, it turned out being much more music than i thought it would be when i set everything up. but what rules are made for is the same setup but the sequence is a 101 and so are all the washed out fx synths. on is to break them i went a different route, i had the dub, delayed stabs synth first as i was messin with my moog and a space echo - which btw is used on every single track i release, if you haven’t noticed yet. so i was trying to build something around those stabs in order to fit the track to the others and so i ended up with another sequence coming from my moog. as there was still space on the record, i decided to add an ambient version of is to break them, i love the ambience on this track. i hope that my love for dub sounds is obvious enough on these tracks. happy i found such an excellent home for the ep!

by the 1970s studio one and clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd had already proved himself to be the defining force in reggae for almost two decades. from running the downbeat sound system on the lawns and yards of kingston in the late 1950s to opening studio one at 13 brentford road at the start of the 1960s, ushering in ska and rocksteady and establishing the careers of most of jamaica’s artists – everyone from bob marley and the wailers, ken boothe, toots and the maytals, the skatalites, jackie mittoo and more – clement dodd had until this point dominated the jamaican musical world.

headed by a carioca who was blessed with the name of his own city, moodisco contains a 3-track bomb from leo janeiro with doc label boss gui boratto and a very special remix by french act rodriguez jr. this could just be a happy coincidence, were itÆs not for the fact that leoÆs trajectory made him a protagonist of the electronic music scene in his hometown, rio de janeiro. he built a career dedicated to music. in a city with so many daytime attractions, it is the night and electronic music that has been blessed with his talent. he has compiled an impressive list of residencies and performances globally. known as one of the ambassadors for brazilian electronic music, leo has the ability to combine originality to a universal language. just like his hometown. on this limited edition vinyl and digital release, leo janeiro, gui boratto and rodriguez jr. presents a serious track sequence of techno and house beats. each artist has kept its own trademark. öi had a lot of ideas and one of them was to have a remix by an artist that i admire, respect and have a personal relationshipö, says leo janeiro. rodriguez jr. house for her is a label founding its birth in the need that she s gone had to express his feelings in his mixes and productions. the time came to him, 1 year ago to give the floor to other people, to let everyone build pieces of music around their lived experience. in this release, the four artists came to cover in mist the wax in a cascade of tablecloths sometimes soft and other times more aggressive, to develop a ep rich in questioning, ranging from dance pieces to other more ambient things, linking them together to tell a story. raär and mp-57, as usual, darkened in the pile, revealing brutal tracks but nevertheless completely full of feelings. devant, with a more colorful touch, has come to appease the ep of a piece of a house deep and sexy, endowed with an atmosphere reminding us much nostalgia. and finally entrave, in a final piece, quietly envelops us to finish to walk in this ep, as in a novel, a kind of sombre happy-end.

(new 2017 masters) after the widespread success of the first minimal vision compilation on the resurgent vibraphone recordings, the true underground sound of rome return with a second volume that takes in tracks made over a 23 year period. what comes across is how consistent the sound is, whenever an individual jam was made. the same heavy-lidded melodics and easy-funking rhythm sections prevail across all nine cuts here, at times hitting the uplifting pace of vertigo or heading into the meditative pastures of sea bird, but always maintaining that quintessential vibraphone feeling. the diggers will be happy to snag the reissued tracks as well as discovering completely fresh material from rome s premier deep house institution.

dmt 013 is philippe petit s first and only techno attack for 2017. the record starts with lose yourself (part i) , an atmospheric track with a groovy rhythmic pattern that builds into a menacing acid trip. it continues with one life , using some very clear dubby pads, snare and toms, its underlying baseline bringing a happy feeling to the e.p. lose yourself (part ii) is aggressive and hypnotic at the same time, its intricate structure leading the listener to a state of trance. the record ends with distant memories , a prime time techno cut with several layers of synths to cover all sound frequencies to devastating effect.

since our beginning, manny cuevas a.k.a. dj m-traxxx has been a big supporter of snuff trax. in return, we totally dig his amazing radio shows and podcasts. this man’s heart is beating for chicago house music and you can feel the impact on all of his productions. snuff trax is very happy to present a whole manny cuevas record: „thee jackin’ zone e.p.“ for „you’ll never know (twisted fantasy)“ manny invited the amazing dj and vocalist josh caffe. together they created a seductive tune that takes us back to the golden era of house. a truly irresistible affair. with the tracks „a matter defined (acid house)“ and „thee jackin zone“ manny captures the wild pulse of the dance floor. sincerely raw, that’s all we need.

didier allyne embodies a certain kind of underground already in the mid 90 s : a record store clerk, distributor, artist and dj, he cross-cuttingly approched the scene even back then, when -french touch- was massive. embracing the new trends from a sideways perspective, he emerged with his own blend of broken beat, soul jazz and warp style electro, always keeping the groove in sight, basicaly what techno is all about, as deep and singular as it gets he began the parisian shop traffic records in 1998. this compilation will be in several volumes that have been flagship pieces of this shop influenced by fat cat records, wally s groove world in others ...this first techno volume highlights the influence that didier received at fat cat by the introspective piece stasis -so-lar- on time in right in 1993 & ritchie inkle, one of the designers of nu loop & whose piece - happy face -represents the techno sound represented by traffic records

osf is happy and proud to announce a new 12-inch by its founder, nur jaber. the label was conceived by the staub resident as her very own creative platform, a place for her to not just release uncompromising music, but also to print poems, letters and in the case of this record, even direct a video. based in berlin, the young producer who was born in beirut remains very attached to her roots. this background partially explains why she can be inspired by tragic events happening regularly in the middle east - making brave statements in the mostly apolitical electronic music environment. the past years have seen nur embrace a career as a music producer, seeing her slowly and steadily become an original new voice in the techno landscape. this ep showcases nur s ability to create and combine daunting atmospherics and frantic paces. it is dark and twisted, with its vocals and screams, but always driving. weapons of mass destruction is meant for banging crazy dance floors, but it is also personal and almost cathartic, especially in the current political situation surrounding all of us. the artwork, as always, is put together by osf family members the beholder and beauty&machines.

it has been eleven long years since urbs dropped his last album which was called “toujours le meme film”. back then, the musician, dj and producer created the soundtrack to a fictitious film noir, which was released on kruder & dorfmeister‘s g-stone label, but after touring europe he almost completely retreated from public life. he does not consider his creativity as being his career, but rather as a part of his life which rarely is subject to concrete planning, and that is why urbs quite consciously took his time to create his latest –untitledalbum.

copenhagens music for dreams comes with yet another strong release - a double album of personal favourites compiled by jan schulte. according to all maps and witness accounts, germany does not officially have any tropical forests. this is of no concern to schulte however, who has unearthed many stunning examples of tropical drum music recorded there. perhaps the number of botanical gardens and palm houses in germany confused musicians into mistaking the climate, or maybe it was just a happy blend of escapism and multi-cultural integration within musical scenes that spawned such a curious output of undefinable tribal folk jazz. most of the tracks picked by schulte were released on small labels in the late 80 s. the musicians involved were mainly traditionally schooled, born and raised in germany. at that time to be interested in foreign folk music might have seemed a gimmick to some, what with the emerging -world music boom- already snowballing into the mainstream. but these songs, while they may be based on musical traditions from foreign lands, deal much more with introspection than exploitation. schulte himself points to his -general fascination for music that describes places where the artists have never been. songs about the jungle or the rainforest made by people that know the rainforest only from television and books. somehow i think you can hear their mythical imagination and fantasy in those tracks,- he explains....
